How to write a CV in English
Some important things to remember:
Australian employers like to know as much as possible, so make sure your resume is very detailed. This means providing information such as previous jobs, any relevant skills acquired in these roles, as well as dates. This will of course, result in a longer CV than you may be used to (two to three pages maximum). Also, unlike in European CVs, where a photograph is necessary, Australian CVs do not require this.
Rough guide for an Australian CV:
- Contact details – including name, address, contact phone number and email, and visa information (if not an Australian Citizen).
- Career Objective – what you hope to achieve in terms of job and career prospects.
- Education – secondary and tertiary qualifications.
- Professional experience – past work history, detailing not only the company, but also duties within the position.
- Interests – extracurricular activities within the community to illustrate all-round achievements.
- Referees – either provide referees with contact details, or state that references are available upon request.
A good tip would be to first apply through a recruitment agency, so that you can accustom yourself to being interviewed in English. Interviews in Australia are less formal than in places like France, however, informal or not, professionalism is always essential.
