The capital of Queensland is the city Brisbane, which is the third largest city in all of Australia, following Sydney and Melbourne. Brisbane is in the southeast corner of Queensland Australia, situated along the curving Brisbane River.
Being Australia’s third largest city you may think to yourself that all the hustle and bustle of big cities will be running rampant on the streets of Brisbane, thinking like that and you will miss out on a fantastic city.
Nestled around beautiful parklands and the Brisbane River, Brisbane’s CBD is the heart of Brisbane and is filled with great restaurants, movie theatres, and great shopping. The best place to take in all of the shopping, restraints, and theatres Brisbane has to offer is the Queen Street Mall.
Local, national, and international fashion labels can all be found with 700+ restraints found at the Queen Street Mall. Find yourself at the Northern end of the Queen Street Mall standing in front of a gorgeous sandstone building that houses Brisbane’s only casino, the Conrad Treasury Casino and Hotel.
The Conrad holds over 80 gaming tables and 1,300 gaming machines. If you’re not feeling lucky you can still try the Treasury Casino’s five restaurants and seven bars. Which many have live music and performances.
The Brisbane River snakes and curves its way through the city of Brisbane making it the longest river in the south east of Queensland, Australia. Along the banks of the river is the Brisbane River walk with pathways, roads, bridges, and riverside parks.
With Brisbane’s great sub-tropical weather, the River walk is a great place for outdoor activities like running, biking, or in-line skating.
The Brisbane River is home to nine bridges and the Story Bridge is most famous among them. Opened on 6 July 1940, Story Bridge is one of only three bridges in the world to offer a bridge climb experience (Sydney’s Harbour Bridge and Auckland’s Harbour Bridge being the other two.) Situated in the south bank parklands, located on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, the Southbank Streets Beach is a man made oasis in the middle of the parklands.
Palm trees sprout out and up toward the sky lining the pristine beach of the half moon lagoon that gives tourists and locals a place in the sun. A great time to hit the Southbank Streets Beach is the Riverfire festival that coincides with the start of the Brisbane festival held each year in September and lends itself to some of the most eye popping and colorful fireworks that electrify the night sky.
Brisbane’s most popular sport has to be Rugby League and watching the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium. The Suncorp Stadium is also one of the hosts for the annual Rugby League State of Orgin game between Queensland (The Maroons) and New South Wales (The Blues.)
The competition between the Blues and the Maroons ranks high on the list of great sport rivalries, like American Baseball’s Red Sox vs. Yankees, Manchester United vs. Chelsea, and India vs. Pakistan in cricket.
Brisbane also enjoys some great water sports on the Brisbane River, especially the Brisbane River Classic, which is the only fishing competition, held on the Brisbane River. Held annually in November or December, it is a great place to watch anglers catch some giant fish or some of the many bull sharks that inhabit the river.
It may be said that the people of Brisbane are the happiest people on the continent and that can be attributed to the quality of life.
Brisbane gets over 300 days of sunshine through the year and with that many days of sun it is no wonder that Brisbane is such a fun city to visit.
